CAUSE: Tsunami Risk Prevention
We sought to inspire greater collaboration and action by creating a short, animated documentary that tells the story of Martina, a 12-year-old girl from a Chilean island. In 2010, Martina’s quick thinking during a tsunami saved many lives, as she alerted her neighbours to the danger by sounding a gong before fleeing to safety.
Tsunamis are catastrophic natural disasters, causing devastating loss of life and destruction of infrastructure. Early warning systems are essential for saving lives, especially in high-risk, densely populated areas. Our challenge was to demonstrate, through Martina’s story, how dangerous yet predictable tsunamis can be—and how effective early warning systems can prevent unnecessary loss.
The documentary played a crucial role in emphasising the importance of early warning systems, particularly in vulnerable regions. It premiered at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) summit and received numerous awards at film festivals globally. Today, the film is a valuable resource for UNDRR programmes, illustrating the life-saving potential of risk reduction strategies.
We chose traditional 2D animation to capture the emotion of Martina’s story. Collaborating with director and animator Leo Campasso, we co-directed and co-produced The Girl and the Tsunami. Director of Photography Jess Bianchi hand-painted the visuals, while Sike added intricate details to the backgrounds. Our team conducted in-depth research on the island and Martina’s home to ensure an accurate, heartfelt portrayal of her experience.
Launched on Valentine’s Day, the campaign emphasised that organ donation does more than save lives—it preserves relationships and memories, allowing love to live on. The films resulted in a 176% increase in charity support for Live Life Give Life, sparking more conversations about organ donation and encouraging families to discuss their wishes.
The films, particularly Jetpack, garnered widespread acclaim, with Rocketships being featured at the Cannes Lions awards and Jetpack earning a spot as one of Vimeo’s Staff Picks. The campaign’s success extended globally, with multiple organ donation charities adopting its message, amplifying its reach and helping ensure that love continues to live on through the gift of life.
