SolarCity is dedicated to promoting renewable energy solutions by encouraging the public to shift from fossil fuels to solar power. Through creative campaigns, SolarCity aims to demonstrate how simple and effective solar energy can be, making it an accessible option for everyday households.
How do you take the concept of solar power and show the public how straightforward it is, especially when compared to the complexity of fossil fuel reliance? The challenge was to create a humorous animated series that showcased the ease of harnessing energy directly from the sun. Our task was to break down the complexities of traditional energy production while contrasting it with the simplicity of solar power, culminating in a final shot that highlights how effortless it can be.
The campaign was entered into a number of awards and was praised for its humorous approach and for highlighting a simple message: that solar power doesn’t have to be complicated. These animations have endured because they offer more than just product promotion—they provide an engaging lesson. In just 30 seconds, they explain how the fossil fuel industry operates, making the content both educational and relevant to this day.

Working alongside stop-motion directors Becho and Mab, and filmed at Can Can Club in Buenos Aires, we wanted the story to feel very technical. Every motor, drill, or vehicle was meticulously referenced to ensure the models were accurate.
Becho and Mab embraced a low-poly design that complemented the technical aspects, crafting everything out of paper before animating it in stop-motion to bring the models to life. We’re confident that when you see these techniques in action, the movement feels so lifelike and beautiful to watch. We also aimed for a cinematic feel, treating each spot like a mini film, where depth of focus, camera movements, and lighting played a crucial role in enhancing the storytelling.
